FAMILY ADVENT DEVOTIONS 2019 - WEEK 2
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
My name is Matthew. You’ve probably heard my name before since I was one of Jesus’ disciples. When I first met Jesus, I was sitting in my tax collector’s booth. I had betrayed a lot of people and made money in dishonest ways. People avoided and disliked me. But something strange happened—Jesus came to talk to me! He came to my house and ate with me; He spent time getting to know me! Jesus showed me that God has compassion for all people. He does not avoid us, He is present. When I wrote my gospel (Matthew) to give the story of Jesus’ birth, it was important for me to make sure you knew that Jesus was also called ’Immanuel’ which means ’God with us.’ The prophet Isaiah had told us this a long time ago (you can read his prophecy in your own Bible in Isaiah 7:14) that the Messiah would be called ’Immanuel,’ but it wasn’t until I met Jesus that I understood this name. ’Immanuel’ means that God cares about us; even though we have sinned, He values us. God doesn’t avoid us, He comes to us! He loves us so much that He sent Jesus (His very own Son!) to die on the cross for us! If God can forgive me for the dishonest tax collector I was before I met Jesus, then I know He can and will forgive you, too.
FAMILY DEVOTION: I Know Immanuel
•••••••• TALK ABOUT IT
What is sin?
How does sin affect our relationship with God?
What did Matthew have to give up to follow Jesus?
How can you follow Jesus?
How does it make you feel knowing that Jesus is with you?
Who can you encourage by reminding them that Jesus is with them?
FAMILY ACTIVITY ••••••••
How well do you know each family member? Take turns making statements about yourself (“My favorite food is broccoli”, “I like to play basketball”, “My favorite color is blue”, etc.). The rest of your family must decide if that statement is true or false. We can know a lot of things about each other, but God knows us even better. God even knows our sins but still loves us and sent His Son for us.
